Things to do in & around Schull...
Rowing

Coastal rowing is a highly active healthy outdoor sport, dating back to the early 1900s, and today operating from a great number of coastal harbours and inlets all around Ireland's coast.

Clubs are affiliated to their Associations who, in turn, are members of the overall governing body, the All Ireland Coastal Rowing Federation. There are a total of 44 clubs, backed by coastal and rural communities from Schull in South West Cork to Cork Harbour, to the shores of Wexford, Wicklow, Dublin, Antrim, Sligo and around the Kerry coastline.

The boats rowed by their area associations are built of natural timbers and are of traditional shape, differing in overall dimensions from the 21' Yawls of the south west and north coasts, 20' Cots, 26' Double-Enders of the east coast, or the Four-Oar Seniors of the Kerry coast. These varying-size Coastal Rowing Boats are all rowed by four oarsmen and women, each pulling a single oar and steered by a Cox who controls the rudder, keeping the boat on course.

Racecourses consist of straight lanes, to turning buoys and a return to the final line. Course lengths vary from 600 to 2,700 metres and are suited to categories for male, female and mixed crews of age groups ranging from under twelves to seniors including veterans.
