Schull Planetarium

Schull Planetarium provides an astronomical educational experience for all the family with an uninterrupted weather proof view of the night sky.

Apart from the obvious fact the it has a connection with the stars, the name Planetarium gives no idea of the remarkable spectacle which awaits each visitor.

Sitting under hemispherical dome in a darkened auditorium, spectators can see an amazingly realistic and accurate reproduction of the star-studded night sky. This man-made universe is produced by an instrument which, from its central position, throws the images of the heavenly bodies on the white-painted dome. It is the Carl Zeiss Planetarium projector. It produces images of the celestial bodies in such a way that they are accurate in size, brightness and position relative to each other. The instrument depicts the general march of the stars across the face of the night sky. The audience sees the night sky portrayed with such realism they feel they are sitting out of doors on the clearest of nights looking up at the natural canopy of stars overhead. The Planetarium offers a fixed schedule of star-shows throughout July and August.

Shows are held on Mondays at 5pm, Wednesdays at 8pm and Fridays at 5pm.

Entry fee is Adults €6, Children, Students and Seniors €4 and a family ticket (2 adults and 2 children) €18.

Group shows can be arranged by appointment subject to a minimum number and availability of a lecturer.

Schull Planetarium is situated in the grounds of Schull Community College.
